We love animals as much as the next woman - but we're not sure we'd want to share our home (let alone our car) with 11 Persian cats, one Himalayan cat, two poodles and nine Pomeranians dogs.

That's what happened to Carol Lynette Samuels, 66, a cat breeder who moved out of her $1.5 million Australian home when she couldn't afford to pay the bills.

She was fined $9000 and forced to surrender all the animals to authorities when an RSPCA inspector found her living with the pets in a car park.

The court heard how the car smelt of ammonia, and the animals were found malnourished with matted fur, fleas and cat flu.

Samuels pleaded guilty to nine counts of breaching the Animal Care and Protection Act by failing her duty of care to feed, clean and provide adequate shelter for the cats.

"I'd lost an awful lot and didn't want to lose my cats as well because they are the only family I've got," she said.
